How other Rescues Can Join and Help Rescues all over the country need help in moving rescued animals between shelter and rescue, rescue and foster homes and rescues and new adoptive families. No matter if the animal is going 60 miles, moving across the state or across the country, transport volunteers make it possible to save, rehabilitate and rehome thousands of animals a year that would other wise die in a kill shelter or languish in a foster home or kennel waiting for a local family when just the right home might be available in another city or state the whole time. Transport volunteers may drive one small, sixty to one hundred mile segment of a cross country relay, give a ride to a dog as they travel on vacation or business, allow a dog to accompany them on an airplane or provide a lift between cities as they communte to and from work. Almost any type of vehicle can be utilized, from sports car to SUV to commercial vehicles. Other ways to help include providing an overnight stay for an animal enroute, help in pulling a dog or cat from a local shelter and getting it on its way to its new rescue or meeting a truck at a local truckstop to pick up a dog and delivering it to the next truck or transporter. RollingRescue is one of a number of internet based transport lists where those who can provide transportation and those who need transportation come together. Our Transport Volunteer database allows rescues to locate people along routes their animals need to travel. Posting yourself to the list in a Transport Available Post when you are traveling also allows folks who need your services to contact you. Reading the Transport Needed posts allows you to see transports you could help with. To Join RollingRescue go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rollingrescue If for some reason you do not want to join the list, I can take your information and just add you to the Transport Volunteer database on our egroups site, but you would not receive the posts for Transports needed which would alert you to any transports going through your area. Using the link above, you will come to our opening egroups page. You would see a note on the far right near the top labled Membership and under it would read You are not a member of this group and a link would be supplied to Join This Group. That will take you to the subscription page. You supply as much or as little information about yourself there as you like, your email address is the minimum. You will also select how you want to view the posts to rollingrescue. Email provides each post to the list to you in your email as it is posted to the list. Daily Digest gives you one email a day that includes all of the posts from that day. Web Only sends you no email. You would not see transports posted arriving in your email, you have to go to the egroups site and read them there, using the link that says Messages. After subscribing, you will have access to all of the egroup features for our group and can click on the link that says Database along the far left side of the page. That link takes you to this page http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rollingrescue/database where you find a link labeled Transport Volunteer Directory. Clicking that takes you to page one of the Directory where you can click on the Add Record, just over the top of thefirst entry in the data base. Click that and you can add your information to the table. You will be asked to give the following information: State: City: Your Name: Rescue Group Affiliation If Any? Type of Vehicle(s): Distance you can transport? What size animal can you transport? Any breeds you can not work with? Do you require a crate? Other Requirements? Can you provide Layover? Your email and / or other contact information: The database is accessible only by other members of rollingrescue, but anyone may join, so this becomes rather public information. Supposedly Egroups has a security system in place that prevents mass harvesting of email addresses. Individual members have never been spammed that I know of. Phone numbers are handy, especially in an emergency, but if you chose to list a phone number, I strongly advise going to www.555-1212.com and seeing if you are in their database. This site, as well as www.anywho.com allow people to do a reverse telephone look up. If you are in your local phone book or city directories such as the Polk directory, chances are you are listed at these sites as well. If you are, then anyone with your phone number can find your full name and address and even a map to your front door from these online directories. These websites do provide information on how to remove yourself from their online directories if you want to, either fully or partially. I recommend checking to see if you are there and removing yourself if you find you are. Whenever you travel, you can also post yourself to the list as a Transport Available. In the subject line of an email you put: Trans Available (city & state)to (city and state). Inside say when you are leaving what city and state and when and where you will end up, give an outline of your route if driving or flight and stops/layovers if flying and say what you have room for. You can include other information such as if you require a crate or not, will be traveling with your own pets and mention any animals you can not work with. Be sure to include your name, email address and phone number if possible. If you want other members to share your post with other lists or rescues, add the phrase: Permission to Cross Post. If you do not want it shared, say DO NOT CROSS POST. If you make certain trips on a regular basis it is helpful to post them periodically, even if you have that information in the Volunteer Directory. The links and the data base mentioned above are for the transport list, RollingRescue. If you want to join RollingRescueTalking...our discussion board, the process is the same only you use http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rollingrescuetalking to arrive at the main page. Thanks again for your interest in rescue transports. Hope to see you on the list !! Sincerely, Laurel Barrick Rollingrescue Email: rollingrescue-owner@yahoogroups.com
